Lighting the Way to Sustainability: Energy Efficiency Upgrades at Temple Beth El

Established in 1921, Congregation Beth El is a vibrant South Jersey synagogue with a rich history and bright future. A place of worship, education and celebration and community service, Beth El’s facility spans an impressive 85,200 feet with a 1,200-seat sanctuary, intimate chapel, 25 classrooms, and nearly 10,000 SF banquet hall. The building has a modern and inviting feel but behind the scenes, its energy infrastructure was becoming costly to maintain.

Recognizing the need for an energy-efficient approach, the board partnered with Vanguard Building Solutions on a plan that will save the congregation nearly $1 million over the next decade.

“It’s smart to work with a company like Vanguard that handles energy-efficiency projects end-to-end” said Beth El Executive Director Josh Laster. “From project design to incentive applications, to project management and securing 0% financing their expertise made a complex process very manageable. Vanguard is the only company we would consider using for our future building energy efficiency needs”

Identifying Opportunities for Energy Efficiency

A long-standing relationship between the synagogue and the CEO of VBS led to the project aimed at modernizing Beth El’s systems and cutting energy costs. VBS approached the project holistically, recommending that Beth El replace aging boilers to drastically reduce energy usage and take advantage of utility incentives for project financing. The solution: installing two new condensing boilers and a high efficiency condensing domestic hot water heater.

In addition, VBS proposed LED lighting for a brighter feel and lower electricity bills. Bundling LEDs with HVAC upgrades also increased utility incentives. More than 1,500 lights we replaced inside, and outside, low-voltage LED lighting was installed for energy-efficient illumination that adds to the synagogue’s aesthetics and security.

Project timing was important with the start of religious school and the Jewish High Holy Days approaching in September 2023. VBS delivered the upgrades quickly and efficiently, completing all but the main sanctuary before the holidays.

A Financial Solution with Lasting Benefits

Thanks to VBS's partnership, Congregation Beth El secured over $410,000 in incentives from the Small Business Direct Install Program (SBDI), helping to cover a substantial portion of project costs. VBS also helped the synagogue access 0% financing for five years, making the upgrades more affordable.

And that’s just a start from a financial standpoint. Congregation Beth El is expected to save $85,000 on their energy bills in the first year alone. Over 10 years the savings will add up to approximately $985,000.

“For nonprofit organizations that depend primarily on giving campaigns and other contributed dollars, finding the extra funds to improve their physical plant is often daunting,” said VBS CEO, Mike Sherman.  “That’s why taking advantage of all the available incentives is so important. The lay leadership and executive team at Beth El are making a lasting impact: a better environment, ongoing savings and reduced carbon footprint.”

Embracing Sustainability for Future Generations

The energy upgrades at Congregation Beth El represent more than just cost savings. They reflect the synagogue’s commitment to sustainability, a value rooted in tikkun olam—the Jewish belief in caring for the world. By lowering CO2 emissions and improving energy efficiency, Temple Beth El is ensuring that it remains a vibrant and welcoming space for generations to come.

A Brighter, Greener Future

With thoughtful planning and expert guidance from VBS, Congregation Beth El has improved its financial outlook and strengthened its role as a steward of both its community and the environment. Not only has the synagogue reduced its environmental impact, but it has also set an example for other nonprofit institutions looking to modernize while maintaining financial responsibility.
